A LESSON IN CULTURE AND IDENTITY
Warning:
This blog entry is really, really stupid. College professors who decide to continue on will be very disappointed and question whether or not I did the reading... but then again, you already read my papers - sorry.
Examining American and Salvadoran Culture Through Film
Two guys. Two great shirts. Nice jeans... probably 32 waist (who am I kidding, I wear a 30 now thanks to the Peace Corps). Couple of drinks, and meaning nothing but business by the facial expression.
Picture Two
Two guys. Two great shirts. Nice jeans... probably a 32 waist (who am I kidding, I wear a 30 now thanks to the Peace Corps). Couple of drinks and shit eating grins on.
So where is the cross-cultural analysis? The first picture is of Gabe (founder of the TANK) and my impression of the El Salvadoran pose. It is serious, cunning, cowboyish, and intimidates me -I absolutely love it. One of the highlights of my day is getting the cutest kids in my site to take a picture and then see them put on their serious face. The second picture is the typical America photo. Everyone is happy, smiling, it is the greatest day ever - forgetting that more than likely, one of the people didn't want to be in the picture and we have to smile so that we have good memories - I also, absolutely love it.
Moral of the story: I am billingual in picture taking. And all of you just learn a very important difference in culture.
Jimbo - out
p.s. Why is my grin so big in the second picture? Well, it was fourth of July weeked and... well, wouldn't you like to know the rest!
